Demodectic Mange
|
Demodectic mange is a skin condition in dogs that is caused by a reaction to a tiny parasitic
mite. Most dogs have these mites, but some go on to suffer this skin complaint. Let's take a look
at the demodex mite and how it causes skin problems in our dogs. We'll conclude by examining what
you can do to treat demodectic mange in your dog.
Demodectic Mange Mites
Demodex is the family of these tiny arthropods that spend their entire lives on or near the hair
follicles of mammals. They are invisible to the naked eye.
Demodex mites live on people too – especially around the eyelashes and eyebrows of older people.
In most cases they cause no problems at all, but sometimes when that person's immune system is
particularly low the demodex mite population can grow out of control and cause skin
irritations.

The species of demodex mite is different in dogs (Demodex canis). These mites are usually passed from mother to
puppy soon after the dog is born. Again, they usually cause no problems as their population is kept at a low level
by the puppy's immune system. If the puppy is malnourished, sick or overly stressed, then this immune system
response can fail to keep them in check.
Demodectic Mange Skin Condition
A dog infested with mange mites will usually display a localized patch or two of hair loss and inflamed
irritated skin. These patches will usually be on the pup's face or front legs.
These reactions can escalate and spread to other parts of the body if the dog doesn't fight off the infestation.
