How To Treat Mange

As you know, demodex mange is a skin reaction in dogs to a microscopic parasite. This parasite (Demodex canis) lives on the hair follicles of your dog. He will have been given the mange mites by his mother soon after he was born, but this is perfectly normal. What is not normal, however is that the mange mite population has not been kept low by his own immune system and has spiralled out of control. Let's take a look in detail at how to treat mange:

Bathing

You should make sure that he is bathed regularly (about once every two months). Don't bathe your dog much more often that this as this will actually increase his skin irritations. What happens when you bathe him is that you clear out all the dirt and debris from his coat (which is good) but you also strip his coat and skin of their natural protective oils (which is bad). So the bathing frequency is a trade off between these two factors and about once every two months or so is about right. You can use a herbal formulation that will be kind to his skin and repel the mites from his hair follicles. This will help to promote healthy coat and skin.

Grooming

If you groom your dog every day you are going to help remove any dirt that has gotten stuck in there. You are also going to help spread around those healthy natural oils in his fur and remove any tangles. You can apply a herbal spray daily that will top up the mite repellent effect in between shampoo applications.

Diet

Your dog's diet is a really important part of his general health. If he eats badly, it will reflect in his immune system's ability to fight off disease, infection and mange mites. If he's still a young puppy, he should be regularly eating small amounts of premium soft food throughout the day. If he's older then try to feed him as much raw unprocessed food as possible. When you use manufactured food, make sure that it is of premium quality.

Exercise

A well exercised dog is a healthy dog. Sedentary dogs are more likely to get sick. If his immune system is in good condition he can fight off disease and mange mites much better.

Water

Give him lots of clean water and change it daily. Filtered is always better than chlorinated tap water.
